The Giant of the Deep

The Ocean Sunfish, or Mola Mola, is one of the heaviest bony fish in the world, growing up to 3 meters in length and weighing over a ton. Seeing one glide effortlessly underwater is a bucket-list experience for divers worldwide. Bali is one of the few places in the world where you can reliably see them in relatively shallow waters.

Best Season to Spot Them

The Mola Mola season in Bali typically runs from **July to October**, when cold water upwellings from deep ocean trenches bring nutrients and cooler water temperatures (around 18-22°C) to the shallower reefs. This sudden temperature drop is what prompts these deep-dwelling giants to ascend to shallower cleaning stations, where they get cleaned of parasites by bannerfish and butterflyfish.

Top Dive Sites in Bali

The best sites to spot them are around **Nusa Penida** (especially Crystal Bay and Toyapakeh) and right here in Candidasa at **Mimpang and Tepekong**. The dive sites in Candidasa are particularly special because they are less crowded than those around Nusa Penida, allowing for a much more intimate encounter with these magnificent fish. Keep in mind that these sites feature deep waters and strong currents, so proper dive planning and advanced experience are highly recommended.
