While most travelers head to the south of the island, seasoned divers know that diving in Candidasa offers some of the most dynamic and rewarding underwater experiences in Bali. Amuk Bay, where Candidasa is located, is a deep-water basin that attracts a rich variety of marine life thanks to the nutrient-rich currents of the Lombok Strait.
Top 3 Dive Sites in Candidasa
There are three dramatic rock islands (Gilis) that define the Candidasa diving experience:
- Gili Mimpang: A chain of four rock pinnacles. Mimpang is famous for its "Shark Rock" where white-tip reef sharks are frequently spotted resting. The corals are exceptionally healthy, and the site is a hotspot for Mola-Mola during the season.
- Gili Tepekong: Famous for its dramatic "Canyon" and spectacular wall. The current can be strong, but it brings with it schools of barracuda, trevally, and large pelagic species. The coral garden here is one of Bali's most beautiful.
- Gili Biaha: Home to a spectacular "Shark Cave" where you can watch sharks at rest. The site also features a stunning wall covered in sponges and gorgonians, offering excellent visibility.
A Paradise for Macro and Wide-Angle Alike
Candidasa is one of the few places in Bali where you can choose between high-octane pelagic dives and serene macro exploration. The jetty at nearby Padang Bai is a world-class muck diving site, while the Gilis of Amuk Bay offer the classic Bali wide-angle shots with crystal blue water and schooling fish.
